Raw Denshi // Australian Art Orchestra at WOMAD

Japanese hip-hop meets Australian Art Orchestra

Bilingual rapping, complex improvisation and orchestral instrumentation come together in this performance, based on Aaron Choulai’s critically acclaimed 2020 album Raw Denshi. He now reimagines this work for the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO, of which he is Artistic Director), along with two pioneers of Japanese hip-hop: Kojoe and Hikaru Tanaka. Through experimentation in hip-hop and improvisation, this work celebrates cultural unity and creative expression through the intersections of Australian and Japanese contemporary languages.

A Swingin' Bella Christmas

A musical celebration of the season.

'You prob'ly just looked up, and it's December!
I must admit, it took me by surprise:
there's months in there I swear I don't remember
and some I'd rather underemphasise...'

What is A Swingin' Bella Christmas? Why, it's a finger-snappin', toe-tappin' romp through traditional carols, modern favourites and specially-written original songs of the season, executed with airy panache by a horn-laden bevy of brilliant performers known throughout the civilised world as the Bella All-Star Band! MCs and songwriters Casey Bennetto (KEATING!, Lorelei) and Geraldine Quinn (Broad, The Passion Of St Nicholas) will be joined by special guests as they navigate the musical joys and sorrows of the season.

Kings will be crowned. Donkeys will dance. Voices will be raised in song. It's not Christmas until it's a Swingin' Bella Christmas!

Geraldine Quinn vocals and vibraslap

Vincenzo Ruberto electric and acoustic bass
Shannon Bourne electric and acoustic guitar
Nick Karasavvidis drums and percussion

JAZZALENKO at the Jazzlab (Melbourne Jazz Co-op)

Tickets

Led by horn-wielding mischief-makers Holly Moore, Hector Harley, and Josh Bennier, JAZZALENKO is a fresh force in the Melbourne jazz scene. After years of heckling each other from across rehearsal rooms, bandstands, and bar stools, they’ve finally decided to put their money where their mouth is.

JAZZALENKO brings together three of Australia's most dynamic “young” horn players in a bold new project that looks to combine their collective writing and improvising styles. Backed by a ripper rhythm section, the band blurs the lines between tradition and innovation.

Holly Moore - Alto Saxophone
Hector Harley - Tenor Saxophone
Josh Bennier - Trombone*
Hugh Stuckey - Guitar
Robbie Finch - Bass
Luke Andresen - Drums

Neon Lit Kludge at the Jazzlab

Tickets

The Duke’s music, fractured and only partially put back together.

Let’s face it, Ellington’s music is timeless. Not in a put-it-in-a-museum-and-protect-it kind of way, but in a let-it-loose, let-it-live kind of way. We reckon the Duke’s tunes are strong enough to withstand being busted down and reassembled, and that’s just what we like to do. If you wanna hear Ellington a la the Cotton Club in the 30’s, buy a reckerd or a time machine. If you wanna hear what a diverse bunch of Melbourne’s finest players make of his music today, come hear Neon Lit Kludge.

Holly Moore – Alto sax

Phil Noy – Tenor sax

Eugene Ball – Trumpet

Ashley Ballat – Trumpet
